100 Years 100 Buildings

John Hill’s 100 Years 100 Buildings celebrates a full centennial of the most eye-catching, ground-breaking and admired architecture around the world. The buildings date from 1916 to 2015, and they are presented with a ‘one calendar year – one spread – one building’ system with glorious full-page portraits and concise and informative texts.

Finnish architecture has a fine presence. The Helsinki Railway Station represents the year 1919; Alvar Aalto’s Villa Mairea the year 1939; and the Säynätsalo Town Hall the year 1952. By and large, this book is an excellent introduction to great architecture for anyone interested in the art of building.

John Hill’s 100 Years 100 Buildings celebrates the most eye-catching, ground-breaking and admired architecture from the last 100 years. The author and curator John Hill is an architect and editor and well-known founder of the blog A Daily Dose of Architecture.

The buildings chosen from this beautiful book date from 1916 to 2015. They are presented with a ‘one calendar year – one spread – one building’ system with glorious full-page portraits and concise and informative texts. The earliest one is the Holland House by Hendrik Petrus Berlage (London, England, 1916); the latest one is The Broad by Diller Scofidio + Renfro (Los Angeles CA, USA, 2015).

For those who are sceptical about our future, John Hill is hopeful in his architectural prognosis:

Whatever the who, what, where, and how are in fifty years’ time, I predict architecture will still be a spatial practice, the means of elevating our life experiences in ways unimagined – hopefully to the inclusion and benefit of as many people in as many places as possible.
