20th-Century Architecture: Finland

20th-Century Architecture: Finland is a much-quoted, hefty encyclopedia of the history of modern Finnish architecture. The book was published to accompany an exhibition at the Deutsches Architecture-Museum in Frankfurt-am-Main in winter 1999/2000.

The copy in stock is in good condition. The covers show some shelf wear, and one critical reader has made some pencil markings with spicy commentary, which adds a flavor to the value of this rarely available title.

20th-Century Architecture: Finland is a much-quoted, hefty encyclopedia of the history of modern Finnish architecture. The book was published to accompany an exhibition at the Deutsches Architecture-Museum in Frankfurt-am-Main in winter 1999/2000. The editors are Marja-Riitta Norri, Elina Standertskjöld and Wilfried Wang, and their target has been to provide a richer and more accurate account of the developments in Finnish architecture than previously available.

The richly illustrated book proceeds chronologically from the late 19th-century to the 1990s. The first half of the book consists of introductory articles which have been written by Sirkkaliisa Jetsonen, Pekka Korvenmaa, Riitta Nikula, Marja-Riitta Norri, Timo Tuomi and Ritva Wäre. 20th-Century Architecture: Finland also contains English translations of a few seminal texts: “Architecture: A Challenge” by Sigurd Frosterus (1904), “Architectonic Anaemia” by P. E. Blomstedt (1928), “Functionalism” by Bertel Jung (1930), “Quo Vadis Architectura?” by Nils Erik Wickberg (1946), and “Public Building and Tradition” by Aulis Blomstedt (1958).  The latter half of the book consists of building presentations ranging from the Finnish Pavilion at the Paris World Fair (Gesellius, Lindgren Saarinen, 19000) to the Finnish Embassy in Berlin by Rauno Lehtinen, Pekka Mäki and Toni Peltola (1996–1999).

The copy in stock is in good condition. The covers show some shelf wear, and one critical reader has made some pencil markings with spicy commentary, which adds a flavor to the value of this rarely available title.
