This extensive book about Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931) is a catalogue for an exhibition that was on display at the Finnish National Gallery Ateneum and the Turku Art Museum in 1996. The book covers Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s life’s work as an artist, architect and illustrator; the 1996 exhibition was the first comprehensive study of Gallen-Kallela’s art since the 1930s.

The book contains Gallen-Kallela’s full biography and several expert articles about Gallen-Kallela’s art. The articles discuss, for example, his portraits, swan symbolism, design, his period in Africa, and the Tarvaspää ateljé building. The book also includes Gallen-Kallela’s list of works, expography and bibliography. The texts are richly illustrated with high-quality images of Gallen-Kallela’s artworks.
