Alvar Aalto: A Life’s Work is a abundantly illustrated and comprehensive monograph about Alvar Aalto’s career and architectural production. The book has been written by Göran Schildt (1917–2009), a well-known Finnish Aalto scholar, art historian and Aalto’s life-long personal friend. Published by Otava in 1994, the book is the fourth and final volume of the Aalto biography completed by Schildt since 1978.

The contents has been thematised according to building types: planning; city and district centres; religious buildings and facilities; buildings for physical health; cultural buildings; office buildings; industrial and commercial buildings; housing; interior design; and design and art. Schildt gives full descriptions of the projects (both realised and unrealised) and catalogues also information about Aalto’s office, clients and colleagues. The book also contains a chapter about Aalto exhibitions, some biographical notes, a chronological list of Aalto’s major works and their locations, as well as a listing of the employees at Alvar Aalto’s office between 1923 and 1992. The text is in English. The book has been illustrated with photographs, architectural drawings and other archive material.

This book servers a dual purpose. It can be read as a much-needed long overdue catalogue of the prolific and versatile life’s work of Alvar Aalto – or, to be more exact, as an attempt to assemble the chaotic arrival material and new discoveries that keep cropping up into a systematic presentation of his oeuvre. Personally, Aalto was not interested in the history of his works: he looked forward only, to new works and challenges.
