Alvar Aalto and the International Style by Paul David Pearson (Whitney Library of Design, 1978) is a critical study that concentrates on Aalto’s formative years from the mid-1920s until late-1940s.

The contents is divided into five sections. Section 1 covers Aalto’s education and early practice and describes architectural trends and Finnish tradition. Section 2 covers the period from 1927 to 1933. Section 3 records Aalto’s changing perception of the nature and mode of architectural design and analyses the Viipuri Library and the Sunila mill and workers’ housing complex. Section 4 focuses on Aalto’s search for a new style through his designs for the Villa Mairea, the New York World’s Fair and the MIT dormitory. Section 5 traces his development up to the midpoint of his career. The book concludes with a brief summary of his projects until his death in 1976,
