Alvar Aalto Architect Vol. 7 – Sunila 1936-54 is a part of the outstanding Alvar Aalto Architect monograph series published by the Alvar Aalto Foundation. The beautifully designed book gives the reader a comprehensive outlook towards the Sunila Pulp Mill and its residential area designed by Alvar Aalto between 1936 and 1954. The book also contains short descriptions of other Aalto’s industrial projects of the same era: the Inkeroinen project (1947–57) and the Kauttua project (1937–44). The book has been lavishly illustrated both with architectural drawings and photographs.

The beautifully designed book gives the reader a comprehensive outlook towards the Sunila Pulp Mill and its residential area which were designed by Alvar Aalto between 1936 and 1954.

The book contains expert articles that have been written by Pekka Korvenmaa and Mia Hipeli. Korvenmaa’s essay, “Modern architecture serving modern production”, explores the interaction between Aalto and Finnish industrialists in the 1930s and the 1940s. Mia Hipeli’s essay, “Sunila Pulp Mill and residential area – The ideology of modernism in practice”, describes the background to the industrial community and how Aalto obtained the commission. The book also contains Hipeli’s descriptions of other Aalto’s industrial projects of the same era: the Inkeroinen project (1947–57) and the Kauttua project (1937–44). There is also a concise description of the cell manufacturing process that is the functional cornerstone of all pulp mill architecture. The book has been lavishly illustrated both with architectural drawings and photographs.
