Alvar Aalto Summer Homes presents a selection of private summer houses and saunas designed by Alvar Aalto (1898–1976). The summer homes featured in the book have been designed for Aalto’s family and family friends. The selection includes Aino Aalto’s early work  Villa Flora from the 1920s, and the world-famous experimental Muuratsalo House. Many of the summer houses and saunas are still in private use. This book takes one on a virtual visit to the Finnish summer and the traditional Finnish way of holiday living.

The book contains an absorbing essay about the Muuratsalo Experimental House by Scott W. Wall, Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and an article by Erkki Helamaa, architect and scholar on Finnish sauna architecture, about Aalto’s architectural ideas and solutions in sauna and holiday home architecture.

The Finnish sauna is closely linked with ethnographically perceived forms as well as the enrooted habits of our country. My relationship to Finnishness and the concept of ‘national’ in my own work is such that the national and Finnish material is realised without any connection to folkloristic forms.
— Alvar Aalto in the 1960s; cited in Alvar Aalto Summer Homes, p. 26.

The beautiful photography by Jari Jetsonen and drawings derived from the Alvar Aalto Museum collections make this book a wonderful, concise reference book to Aalto’s much admired small-scale architecture.
