American Houses for the New Century (Universe Publishing, 2001) by Cathy Lang Ho and Raul A. Barreneche presents 20 superb, custom-designed houses by leading architects. The contributions are, for instance, by Fougeron Architecture, Rick Joy Architect, Shim+Sutcliffe Architects, Alberto Kalach, Toshiko Mori Architect, Steven Holl Architects, Marlon Blackwell, and RoTO Architects.
The houses in this book offer valuable lessons on how to construct the house, physically and psychologically. For example, Amy of them reinterpret and decontextualise materials and concepts from other realms of life. Several of the architects in this book turn to industrial materials, inspired buy their doggedness, economy, and prosaic qualities (…) Many houses have also borrowed spatial ideas from other building types, domesticating elements from the office, museum galleries, and art studios. Even if the houses in this book – like all custom, architect-designed houses – are singular (and expensive), there architects, like generations before them, are using the territory of the small-scale, domestic building to explore methods and concepts of building that may be further explicated in their own or others’ future work.
