Architectural Monographs No 4: Alvar Aalto

The Academy Edition’s Architectural Monograph No 4 was among the first comprehensive, international outlooks to the architectural legacy and works of Alvar Aalto (1989–1976). The book, published in 1978, contains three essays that frame Alvar Aalto within a larger theoretical and historical framework.

The presented projects cover the essential works of Alvar Aalto from the Jyväskylä Worker’s Club (1924) to the Students’ Hostel buildings for the Helsinki University of Technology in Otaniemi (1962–1966). There is also an extensive list of buildings and projects, and a 1-page bibliography of existing Aalto literature.

The copy for sale is in good condition with respect to its age. The covers show some minor wear and ageing and fading of colours, but the pages are clean and tidy.

The book, published in 1978, also contains three essays that frame Alvar Aalto within a larger theoretical and historical framework. Demetri Porphyrios’s  fine essay “Heterotopia: A Study in the Ordering Sensibility of the Work of Alvar Aalto” is a prelude to his later book Sources of Modern Eclecticism (1983). Raija-Liisa Heinonen, a much-too-soon deceased Finnish art historian, writes about Nordic Classicism and its impact on Aalto in her “Some aspects of 1920s Classicism and the Emergence of Functionalism in Finland”. Steven Groák’s “Notes on Responding to Aalto’s Buildings” takes on a more experiential approach and discusses Aalto’s idiosyncratic form language in his various buildings.

Aalto [was] not just the product of a twentieth-century sensibility, but (…) a mind steeped in the thought processes of the preceding age.
