Architecture in the 20th Century is a box set that contains two volumes about the history of modern architecture. Volume 1 covers the early developments of modernism from 1773 to the Second World War; Volume 2 covers years 1944 to 2004.  The publication is still being used as the standard textbook in many architecture schools all over the world; it was produced by Taschen in 2005.

The contents proceed chronologically, and the history of architecture is discussed within the context of societal changes and technical advances in engineering. Both of the books have been richly illustrated with architectural drawings and photographs. The image quality is great and the essays are erudite, yet written in an accessible language. In short: if you need only one book about modern architecture, Taschen’s Architecture in the 20th Century is the one.
