Kenneth Powell’s Architecture Reborn: The Conversion and Reconstruction of Old Buildings presents transformations and conversions where an old structure has been successfully re-designed to serve new functions and new users.

The contents have been divided into four thematic chapters: Living & Working, Leisure & Learning, Museums Transformed, and The Future. Each chapter presents concrete architectural projects with a thorough description and an array of informative images. The project list includes e.g. Graves House by Michael Graves, National Studio for Contemporary Art by Bernard Tschumi, Tate Modern by Herzog & de Meuron and many more. There’s also an informative introduction to the architectural history and theory of conversions and re-use. According to the blurb, “the book shows how today’s architects have called on historical structures and brought them back into everyday life: the legendary Fiat factory is transformed into a cultural and commercial complex; a Spanish palace becomes a public library; and an armaments factory is reused as an art and media centre. Whilst the original structures are often not historically or architecturally outstanding, may – including a sixteenth-century cathedral, a nineteenth-century propeller factory and the former headquarters of the Nazi youth movement – make intriguing stories in themselves.”
