A+U May 1978: The Work of Charles W. Moore is a theme issue that features 50 works designed by Charles W. Moore (1925–1993) and his teams between late 1940s and 1977. The projects include mostly housing projects – include the groundbreaking Sea Ranch Condominium in California completed in 1965 – but there are also club houses, office facilities, educational buildings and competition entries. The issue also contains seven essays about Charles W. Moore and his influential architectural thinking. The authors are Kazuhiro Ishii, Donny Lyndon, Gerald Allen, David Gebhard, Leland S. Burns, Rosemarie Haag Bletter and Martin Filler.

One of the jewels is Charles W. Moore’s Personal Statement:

For years I have been told that there are ‘rational’ (good) and ‘irrational’ architects (including me, and bad). I have come to suspect that there are imposters in the House of Reasons that the opposite of ‘rational’ is not ‘irrational’ but ‘real’ and that the logically deduced but altogether untested postulates of architects who claim sweet reason for their constructs of rules.
