Open Spaces (Aussenräume, Birhäuser, 2000) is the second volume in the 3-part monograph series of the Swiss landscape architect Dieter Kienast (1945–98). The beautiful black&white photographs are by Christian Vogt.

The book presents Kienast’s understanding of modern landscape architecture as realised in his designs for public open space. According to the blurb, his works reveal a different spatial structure and decodes the general in order to show the special nature of the place. The public open spaces, designed in collaboration with e.g. architects Herzog & de Meuron, Michael Alder, and Broggi + Santschi, are located in Germany and Switzerland and their presentations include short, analytical texts. The volume contains contributions by Erika Kienast-Lüder, Eric A. de Jong, Robert Schäfer, Andreas Tremp, Günther Vogt, Arthur Rüegg, Udo Weilacher, Thomas Göbel-Groß, André Schmidt, and Annette Gigon. The texts in the richly illustrated book are in German and English.
