Carlo Scarpa: The Craft of Architecture – Das Handwerk der Architektur (ed. Peter Noever; Hatje Cantz & MAK Center for Art and Architecture 2003) analyses Scarpa’s unique architectural methods especially regarding materials and function. With contributions by Peter Noever, Tadao Ando, Roberto Gottardi, and Arata Isozaki, as well as an interview with Saverio Anfodillo. The book was published on the occasion of an exhibition of the same name in the MAK, Vienna, , a representative survey of the architect’s achievements in his cooperation with the cabinetmaker Saverio Anfodillo.
Kontext und Materialität waren die zentralen Themen im Werk des italienischen Architekten Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978). Seine Auseinandersetzung mit den komplexen Beziehungen zwischen überlieferten und zukunftsweisenden Formen, sein Blick aufs Detail ebenso wie auf den größeren Zusammenhang der „Site Specifity” und schließlich die immense Sensibilität, mir der er Funktion und Material in Einklang brachte, fordern unser Verständnis dessen heraus, was moderne Architektur sein kann.
The work of the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) centers around two issues: context and materiality. Scarpa’s dedication to the complex relationships between traditional and future-oriented forms, his eye for details and the wider perspective of site specifity, and the enormous sensitivity he mustered to reconcile function and material challenge our understanding of what modern architecture can be.
