The title of  “Der Magus des Nordens” – the magician of the North – was given to Alvar Aalto by Sigfried Giedeon in his postcard to Aalto in 1933. The book “Der Magus des Nordens – Alvar Aalto und die Schweiz” celebrates Alvar Aalto’s centennary by providing a comprehensive study of Aalto’s long-term connections and work in Switzerland. The texts are in German and the rich illustration contains architectural photos and drawings as well as some fantastic travel pictures from the family albums.

The book opens with Teppo Jokinen’s lovely interview with Aino and Alvar Aalto’s children Hanni Alanen and Hamilkar Aalto conducted in Aalto’s studio in Munkkiniemi in 1998. The expert articles have been written by Ulrich Stucky, Teppo Jokinen, Bruno Maurer, Hannu Laaksonen, Arthur Rüegg, Karin Gimmi, and Antoine Baudin. The book also contains a synopsis of Aalto’s career and a German translation of one of Aalto’s most significant essays on the direction of modernism: “Der Wiederaufbau Europas stellt die zentralen probleme der Baukunst unserer Zeit zur Diskussion” (European reconstruction brings to the fore the most crucial problem facing architecture in our time).
