Double Happy: (8+8=19) Views on Architecture in Finland and China

Notkean aikakauslehden muotoon koottu Double Happy on uuden, rajoja avaavan arkkitehtuuriajattelun manifesti. Julkaisun taustavoimia ovat nuorten arkkitehtitoimistojen Newly Drawn -ryhmä ja kahden muotoilu/taidevaikuttajan Anni Puolakan ja Jenna Sutelan OK Do -praktiikka. Newly Drawn astui julkisuuteen hienolla portfolio-kirjallaan jonka Rakennustieto Oy julkaisi vuonna 2009. Double Happy -julkaisu on pienipainoksinen omakustanne vuodelta 2010.

Double Happy kertoo uudesta arkkitehtuuriajattelusta kuvin ja sanoin. Julkaisussa on haastatteluja, kokemuksellisia arkkitehtuurianalyyseja ja teoreettisia esseitä, Kytkös Kiinaan on käytännöllinen. Ryhmän arkkitehtien näyttely- ja kilpailuprojektit Kiinassa tutustuttivat kollegoihin. Arkkitehti ja monipuolinen kulttuurivaikuttaja Tuomas Toivonen kertoo esipuheessaan huomanneensa, kuinka samanhenkistä nuorten kiinalaisten arkkitehtien ajattelu on suomalaisten kollegojen kanssa.

Entä mitä tuo ”Double Happy” oikein tarkoittaa? Julkaisun nimi liittyy muun muassa kiinalaisiin kirjoitusmerkkeihin. Alvar Aaltoon ei laskujeni mukaan viitata kuin kerran. Tämä aarre kannattaa ostaa, lukea, jakaa ja tallentaa.

Composed in the form of a flexible magazine, Double Happy is the manifesto for new, unbound architectural thinking. The driving forces behind the publication are the Newly Drawn collective composed of young Finnish architectural firms and the OK Do design/art practice established by two young activists Anni Puolakka and Jenna Sutela. Newly Drawn became public with their fine portfolio which was published by Rakennustieto Ltd in 2009. Double Happy is a self-published limited edition published in 2010.

Double Happy tells about new ways of making architecture with texts and images. The contents include interviews, experiential architecture analyses, and theoretical essays. The link with China is practical. Newly Drawn’s many exhibitions and design projects in China introduced them to Chinese colleagues. Tuomas Toivonen, an architect, and many-sided, influential cultural activist, writes in his introduction that the new generation of Chinese architects shares many similarities with the Finns.

And what about the title, ”Double Happy”, what does it mean? Well, it has something to do with Chinese characters, among other things. If I calculated it correctly, Alvar Aalto gets referred to only once. This significant article is very much worth buying, reading, sharing and archiving.
