Richly illustrated Drawn in Sand presents unrealised visions by Alvar Aalto (Alvar Aalto Museum, Alvar Aalto Academy, Museum of Finnish Architecture, 2002). The book is based on an exhibition at the Museum of Finnish Architecture June 13th – August 28th 2002.

Drawn in Sand: Unrealised Visions by Alvar Aalto contains a detailed presentation of 19 unrealised projects from Jämsä Church (1925) in Finland to the Shiraz Art Museum (1969–73) in Iran. There is also a conversational interview between Ilona Lehtinen and Jaakko Kontio who are both longtime architects in Aalto’s office, and a listing of all the 80 unfinished projects during Aalto’s career. The expert authors are Esa Laaksonen, Mirkka Vidgren, Marjo Holma, Risto Raittila, Elina Standertskjöld, Pirjo Hyytiäinen, Hanni Sippo, Katariina Pakoma, Mia Hipeli, Marjaana Launonen, Ulla Kinnunen, Arne Heporauta and Sirkkaliisa Jetsonen.

The text is in English, but there is a summary of the project descriptions in Finnish as well. The book has been lavishly illustrated with photographs, Aalto’s architectural drawings and sketches, and other visual archive material.

The copy currently in our stock is in very good condition. The pages are clean without any markings. The glueing of the binding is fine.
