Ernst Koller’s active life as a designer covers almost seventy years – a period lasting from the revolutionary times of ‘New Architecture’ up to the present day. Adopting the formal canon of the Bauhaus architects, he modernized the metal building frame in the early ‘Thirties. This book reveals the panorama of an epoch, not only leading us back into the past, but also familiarizing us with inventive details that have been – and still are – vitally important for the development of modern architecture. In chapter one, biographical notes record a few decisive moments in Koller’s life as a designer. Chapter two presents a brief historic survey of his metal-building company, Metallbau Koller, while chapter three demonstrates the basic importance of profiles, illustrating the unshakable belief of the Thirties in the primacy of construction. Structure, in its aesthetic appeal to the senses, should be considered as an additional source of beauty.
