Finnish Modern Design: Utopian Ideals and Everyday Realities, 1930–1997 is a catalogue for an exhibition which was held at the Bard Graduate Center for studies in the Decorative Arts, New York, in spring 1998. The exhibition was organised in collaboration with Design Museum (formerly the Museum of Art and Design), Helsinki and it featured the development of modern design in Finland. Architect Alvar Aalto played a critical role in bringing modernism to Finland and in shaping Finnish design culture, but there is an array of architects, designers and artists whose input was crucial to our current conception of the legacy of Finnish design.

This hefty and richly illustrated catalogue opens with a general introduction by Nina Stritzler-Levine and continues with 10 essays each of which focuses on one particular sphere of Finnish design. The topics range from textile design and ceramics to the shaping of a modern national identity by means of modernist architecture. The authors are recognised scholars in their fields: Marianne Aav, Jari Ehrnrooth, Hildi Hawkins, Harri Kalha, Kaisa Koivisto, Pekka Korvenmaa, Taisto Mäkelä, Hannele Nyman, Leena Svinhufvud and Susann Vihma.
