Five California Architects (Hennessey + Ingalls, Inc., 1975/1960) by Esther McCoy and Randell L. Makinson is a study of five influential but forgotten masters: Bernard Maybeck, Irving Gill, Greene and Greene, and R.M. Schindler.

These were men with a kind of stubborn courage, who, battling with their own convictions, managed somehow to overcome a host of obstacles; in many cases, it would see,m bu sheer strength of will and purpose. They built without compromise and too often without reward, proceeding sometimes slowly, sometimes with what seemed amazing intuition. Each in his very separate way worked through a deep knowledge of the present and future, arriving at brilliant solutions to the problems at hand, often transcending architecture and marking himself as an innovator.
– Esther McCoy and Randell L. Makinson, Five California Architects (Hennessey + Ingalls, Inc., 1975/1960). Excerpt from the Forword by John Entenza, p. vi.
