Although published already in 1993, From Folklore to Applied Arts is still an excellent introduction to Finnish culture, Finnish cultural history and the modern developments of Finnish arts within a wider European context. The target audience is an international reader who is interested in Finland and its contribution in the domains of folklore, architecture, the visual arts, music, literature, the dramatic arts, crafts and design, cinema and popular culture.  The authors are esteemed experts in their fields, and the book is amply illustrated.

The architectural section has been written by Vilhelm Helander, Professor Emeritus in architecture history at the Helsinki University of Technology. His writing is vivid and accessible, and his essay gives a detailed account of the key developments of Finnish architecture from the timber building tradition to late 20th-century modernism.

The cover shows Helvetinkolu, the Finnish Pavilion at the World Exhibition in Sevilla designed by Monark Group (Juha Kaakko, Petri Rouhianen, Jari Tirkkonen, Juha Jääskeläinen and Matti Sanaksenaho). Their design won the architectural competition in 1989; the pavilion was completed in 1991. The widely published pavilion was shortlisted in the Mies van der Rohe European Prize for Contemporary Architecture in 1992.

The copy for sale is in good condition. The book itself is as good as new, but the previous owner has got their markings from the front flyleaf.
