GA Houses 9: New Waves in American Architecture was published in 1981 and it features a selection of early post-modernist / late-modernist residential architecture. The cover image is from the Fun House project by Eric Owen Moss.

The project architects include Bohlin Powell & Larking Cywinski, Mitchell Giurcola, Edward Larrabee Barnes, Joel Levinson, Joan Sacks, Michael Franklin Ross and Ricardo Bofill / Taller de Arquitectura. The Special Feature section in GA Houses 9: New Waves in American Architecture showcases housing projects by Eric Owen Moss, Frederick Fisher, Peter C. Papademetriou, Studio WORKS, Peter de Bretteville, Taft Architects and Morphosis. The featured projects are both experimental and built private houses, villas and small-scale townhouses.

The issue also includes a comprehensive analysis of the exquisite residence building for the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, US, designed by Eliel Saarinen in 1928–29.

The Saarinen Residence was a demonstration of a way of life, one perhaps displaced by circumstance and hopeful of its potential revitalisation in the new idea which was Cranbrook. The house does not sand alone, for it is part of a larger groupings of buildings which suggest a community. Its richness of detail and demonstration of the art of design and handicraft make the personality which Saarinen saw as the wellspring of all creation. That building intuition might represent individual inventiveness and the collective embodiment of the expression of a community, this is still the lesson yet to be fully realised in our architecture today and, in part, the continuing legacy of Eliel Saarinen.
