If one should pick one architectural practice to represent Finnish 20th-century late modernism, Gullichsen-Kairamo-Vormala would certainly be one of the strongest candidates for the job. Architects Kristian Gullichsen (1932–2021), Erkki Kairamo (1936–1994) and Timo Vormala (1942–) brought their individual talents together already in 1973. Sebastiano Brandolini’s book illustrates their outstanding, versatile career from the early days up until 1991.

Brandolini’s Gullichsen, Kairamo, Vormala. Architecture 1969–2000 (Skira editore S.p.A., 2000) is a beautiful, handy and practical reference book. It starts off with Brandolini’s essay A building trio and showcases the major works of the office. The list of major works, collected by Antti Tokola , biographies, a list of further reading and a list of associates 1973-99 are included in the appendix.

Whether they be residential, industrial or institutional buildings, isolated or in urban contexts, they constantly endeavour to design places of quality, discreet enough or not cast disparaging light on their surroundings. For them, creating a place means thinking without rhetorics about a series of gestures: departing, seeking, perhaps pausing and observing the shifting light, arriving at the door, entering, putting down your umbrella, looking back at where you arrived from, sitting down. That sequence includes a series of perceptions, from light to materials, from slope to views, from shapes to sounds.
