Helsinki Contemporary Urban Architecture is a photo book and a follow-up to Jussi Tiainen’s (b. 1954) Contemporary Finnish Architecture (2002). It showcases 51 projects built in and around Helsinki at the turn of the millennium. The introductory essay titled “Looking for the city: Helsinki at the beginning of the 21st century” is by Lauri Jääskeläinen, Acting Head of the Building Control Department of the City of Helsinki. The book closes with a diagrammatic map of the locations to assist visitors to find the site.

Tiainen offers a stunning visual narrative of the prolific and architecturally ambitious years of the early 2000s. The variety of projects is massive, and all the iconic buildings are included: Ville Hara’s Kupla lookout tower, Steven Holl’s Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Nokia HQ by Helin & Siitonen, the Arabianranta developments, to name a few. The book is a must-have for anyone seriously interested in contemporary Finnish architecture.
