Hikes into Pietilä Terrain is a small book of the Taiteentutkija journal of art history. The issue contains writings about Reima Pietilä (1923–1993), the most original Finnish architect of the 20th century. The collection is based on a research seminar which was organised by Rakennustaiteen seura [Architectural Society] in Dipoli, Espoo, in 2005.

The writers include experts in Pietilä research and in the history of Finnish architecture: Malcolm Quantrill, Taisto H. Mäkelä, Tore Tallqvist, Pauline von Bonsdorff, Pekka Passinmäki, Aino Niskanen and many others. The book has been illustrated with black&white photographs of Pietilä’s architecture and his idiosyncratic drawings and sketches. One of the jewels of the book is the previously unpublished text Pure Architecture by Reima Pietilä: lecture notes from 1965 which have been edited by Jorma Mänty and Garreth Griffiths.

Theses:
– architecture conceived as independent formal structure
– co-ordination of all the content of architecture by a consequent formal system
– the valid criteria of architecture can be derived only by conceiving of architecture as a pure formal whole
But what is it to be that kind of a whole?
How can any formal criteria be related to the other usual criteria of architectural form?
To social, technical, economical, and functional criteria?
Theory starts with questions.
