Hunch 9/2005 focuses on the collapse of the modernist paradigm and the emergence of new epistemology in architecture and the art. The material consists of commissioned essays as well as lecture transcriptions, interviews and other academic projects accumulated at the Berlage Institute in 2003–2005. This Hunch issue was edited by Penelope Dean together with the founding editor Jennifer Sigler and the editorial Board of Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Vedran Mimica and Roemer van Toorn.

This particular issue of Hunch is subtitled Disciplines. Hunch 9/2005 explores five themes: return, resonate, reason, realise and relay. The fields of study are music, painting, sociology, economics, history, theory, archive, technology, production, materials, organisation, intersect, detour and exit. The authors include the leading names of contemporary theory of architecture and the arts such as Brian Eno, Richard Sennett, Pier Vittorio Aureli, Greg Lynn, R. E. Somol and Rem Koolhaas. The texts are all in English, and the lavish illustration consists of colour photographs, diagrams and other visual material.

There have always been different modes of recuperating disciplinarily, from ‘material specificity’ during modernism to various ‘language’ models during post-modernism… As an editorial project, Hunch 9 identified a different disciplinary problem. In architectural publications today it is not the quantities of publications that are the problem, but rather their consistent failure to repent lines of reasoning.
