The book has been published in the German In Detail publication series in 2003. In Detail: Building in Existing Fabric has been edited by Christian Schittich and it presents details and other architectural drawings by, for example, Alvaro Siza Vieira, Future Systems, Baumschlager & Eberle, Herzog & de Meuron, and Renzo Piano Building Workshop.

The book contains introductory essays by Christian Schittich, Johann Jessen and Jochem Schneider; Günther Moewes, and Berthold Burkhard who examine the economical, technical and historical aspects of the topic and discuss future solutions. The project presentations explain the basic architectural ideas illustrated with architectural drawings such as site plans, floor plans, sections and projections as well as relevant connection details and horizontal and vertical sections in scale. The presented projects include both private house extensions and conversions and widely published architectural highlights such as MoMA QNS in New York, Tate Modern in London, and the British Museum Courtyard in London. All the texts are in English.
