In Detail: Building Simply (ed. Christian Schittich, Birkhäuser Edition Detail 2005) studies examples of modest and unpretentious building in international architecture.

The book opens with expert articles with contributions by Christian Schittich, Florian Musso, Christoph Affentranger, Martin Rauch and Stefan Schäfer. The main part of the book studies examples of unostentatious architecture. The project examples are from all over the world and they include houses, a cemetery, facilities for culture and leisure, and even a Finnish sauna by Jaakko Keppo. All the texts are in English, and as always in the volumes in the In Detail series, the rich illustration consists of high-quality photographs and detailed architectural drawings.

In a time of loud gestures and ostentation, unpretentious buildings, reduced to their essentials, are soothing in their very purity. [This volume] demonstrates the breadth and complexity of the issues involved in building simply, from functional and economic demands, through ecological and energy-related aspects, to design and construction requirements.
