This portable-sized book Modern Architecture in Finland was published in 1970 after the so-called golden era of modern Finnish architecture. Asko Salokorpi, a prolific architecture critic and expert in 20th-century Finnish architecture, offers a concise history of the developments from National Romanticism to structuralism of the 1960s. The texts are in English, and there is an abundance of both black& white and colour photographs. The book concludes with short biographical notes about the most famous Finnish architects.

Salokorpi’s reading of the history of Finnish architecture exemplifies a viewpoint where functionalism and international modernism were considered as expressions of a genuine ethos of modern Finland. In that respect, the book offers not only an accessible account of the history of 20th-century Finnish architecture but also an intriguing example of the historiography of Finnish modernism.
