When published in 1973, Modern Movements in Architecture by Charles Jencks gave a ground-breaking and polemical account of the history of modernism by providing an alternative, more pluralistic and multivalent approach towards the tradition of developments within the Modern Movement. According to Charles Jencks, “history is a series of discontinuous narratives and extended probes”. Modern Movements in Architecture consists of eight chapters that focus on the modernist masters from Mies van Der Rohe to Le Corbusier, and examines Alvar Aalto’s architecture from the viewpoints of communication and information theory. For Jencks, Alvar Aalto uses both humanism and double-coding of naturally expressive forms and rationalism. The book concludes with an account of postmodernism in the post-1960s societal situation.
