National Landscapes is an impressive book that presents 27 nationally relevant landscapes in Finland. The book was published by the Ministry of Environment Finland in 1993 as a result of a new survey of historically significant and culturally valuable sites.

The book continues a long tradition of showcasing Finland’s geographic range and the variety of scenic locations. Landscapes represent the most excellent natural and cultural resources of Finland’s various regions. They also reflect the use of land in traditional livelihoods and their impact on nature. The publication of National Landscapes was a Finnish response to UNESCO’s initiative to preserve the world’s cultural and natural heritage.

The 27 national landscapes cover all over Finland; their locations range from maritime Helsinki to the Utsjoki river valley in Lappland. Each of the landscapes is presented with a brief introduction, a few photographs and some historical images. The authors of the presentations are Tapio Heikkilä (Vaara Villages of North Karelia), Erkki Härö (Hailuoto and Heinävesi), Pekka Kärki (Kyrö River Valley and South Ostrobothnian Plains), and Lauri Putkonen (all other sites). The introduction is by Elias Härö and  Mikko Mansikka. All texts are in English.
