Parks and Cemeteries (Parks und Friedhöfe, Birhäuser, 2002) is the third and final volume in the monograph series of the Swiss landscape architect Dieter Kienast (1945–98). The beautiful black&white photographs are by Christian Vogt.

The book explores Kienast’s approach to landscape architecture. The blurb describes his poetic works to “attain cohesion by the contrasting poles of naturalness and cultivation and remain forward-looking in their approach to nature”. The park and cemetery designs showcased in the books consist of both unrealised projects, competition entries and finished park and cemetery realisations in Germany and Switzerland.  The book also contains an introduction by Walter Prigge and Kai Vögler, Dieter Kienast’s essay “The nature of things – urban landscapes”, a list of project data, and other reference material pertaining to Kienast’s architectural production. The texts in the richly illustrated book are in German and English.

Please also check the other two parts in the monograph series: Gardens – Gärten and Aussenräume – Open Spaces.
