Perspecta 9/10 is the most important architectural publication ever issued on early postmodernist thought. The copy in stock is the 1966 edition of the double issue 1965/1966. The Perspecta magazine is published by Yale University School of Art and Architecture; the editor of Perspecta 9/10 was Robert A.M. Stern, a master’s candidate at Yale at the time.
Browsing the contents of Perspecta 9/10 is like having a mini-lecture of 20th-century architectural modernism. This is the issue where Princeton graduate Robert Venturi first published selections of his forthcoming book Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture. The text is illustrated with project images such as the House for Vanna Venturi in Chestnut Hill, PA; or the early sketches of the Guild House, or the Friend’s Housing for the Aged. It is here where we can read Charles W. Moore’s groundbreaking essay “You Have to Pay for the Public Life” and about the Disneyfication of public space for the first time. The highlights also include Henry-Russell Hitchcock’s discussion on Alvar Aalto: “Aalto vs. Aalto: The Other Finland”; or Philip Johnson’s analysis of the architecture of the 1960s “Whence & Whither: The Professional Element in Architecture” and much more.
