The Italian architect Renzo Piano believes in craftsmanship, in the primacy of ‘making,’ but he also advocates the mastery of the latest in technology. The high-tech lable has been attached to his famed Centre Pompidou, the spaceship catapulted into the heart of Paris in the 1970s, although Piano claims the building is really a ‘gigantic piece of craftsmanship.’ Defying classification, his designs are almost bewilderingly varied, ranging from the space frames of the 1960s to an experimental car in the 1970s to the sophisticated museum of The Menil Collection in Houston, 1981–1983; from new buildings to rehabilitated old ones and the restoration of entire neighborhoods.
