The project patrons, whose addresses are included in the book, were the then President of Finland Mauno Koivisto, and GCMG his Royal Highness, the then Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip.

The book showcases recent archaeological finds and research on the topic.  Contributions by Torsten Edgren, Henry Forssell, John Hackman, Juhani Grönhagen, Mirja Kanerva, Kim Montin, Eero Naskali, Pekka Sarvas, Paul Stenman, and Pekka Toivanen.

The text is in English. The book is richly illustrated with photographs, maps and other historical material.
