SITE Architecture as Art is a monograph which presents works and the philosophical foundations of the SITE architecture and environmental art studio founded by James Wines in New York City in 1970. The internationally esteemed studio is especially renowned for their showroom projects for the Best Products company and their artistic work which fuses architecture and art into expressive socio-political commentary.

The book, published in 1980, contains lists of buildings and projects, publications and exhibitions. Some selected projects are presented in more detail with photographs, model images, drawings, plans and sketches. The book also contains Bruno Zevi’s seminal essay The Poetics of the Unfinished and SITE’s artistic statement titled Notes on the Philosophy of Site.

For SITE, the notion of architecture as art has meant exploring a new iconographic role for buildings, based on the conviction that the ideas a structure generates as an extension of its own functions are neither as valid, nor as interesting, as those it absorbs from the outside (…) For SITE, architecture is the subect matter or raw material of art, and not the objective of a design process (…) It is SITE’s opinion that architecture is the only intrinsic public art – all others, like painting, sculpture, and crafts, being only incidentally or by concious choice a part of the public domain.
