Sveaborg – Suomenlinna is a richly illustrated book that introduces the reader to the history and current state of the magnificent island fortress outside Helsinki. At its inception as Sveaborg in 1748, Finland was part of the kingdom of Sweden. The purpose of the coastal fortress was to serve as a bulwark in the defence of the entire realm. Today, Suomenlinna is a popular venue for cultural events and outings and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city of Helsinki. Suomenlinna was included in the Unesco World Heritage List in 1991.

The book has been written by C. J. Gardberg who was the director of the Turku municipal museum of history in 1960–1972 and a scholar of the cultural history of Finland. The photographs are by Kari Palsila. The contents have been divided into chronologically proceeding chapters. Gardberg discusses the political history of the kingdom of Sweden, the building of the fortress, Augustin Ehrensvärd’s career and Suomenlinna’s role as a bastion, prison camp and military base in the many wars and upheavals during the centuries. The texts are in English.
