The Essence of Finnish Design and Culture: Mythology, Moomin, and People in the Intimate Wilderness (フィンランドのくらしとデザイ) is the catalogue for an extensive exhibition of Finnish art and design that toured in Japan in 2012. The book presents works by national romantics such as Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Eero Järnefelt and Eliel Saarinen and portrays Finnish cultural history against the context of the Moomins by Tove Jansson and modern design objects by, for example, Artek, Iittala and Marimekko.

The richly illustrated book opens with an introduction to Finnish culture and national-romantic Finnish landscape painting. The contents also discuss Moomins and the Kalevala and present the legacy of modern artists, architects and designers such as Maija Isola, Kaj Franck and Alvar Aalto. The concluding chapters discuss Finland today and present the “2nd Cycle” project of Artek, The Luukku House” project of the Wood Program of the Aalto University, and other recent development projects by Finnish companies. The texts are in Japanese and English.

The exhibition was organised by the Aomori Museum of Art, Utsunomiya Museum of Art, Shizuoka City Museum of Art, Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum and Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art together with the support of Embassy of Finland in Japan and the Finland Institute in Japan.
