The Islamic City explains the traditional principles of urban planning in muslim countries and some preservation propositions suitable for historically significant islamic cities. The book has been edited by R. B. Serjeant and it was published by Unesco in 1980.

The contents consists of 13 expert articles in two parts. The first part explains the Islamic city, its religious, legal, governmental and educational institutions, the physical layout through some typical examples, and key features that relate to commerce and social structures.

The second part deals with urban change, renovation and conservation discussed through four cases: San’ā’, Fez, Aleppo, and the modern vision of Ali Mubārak. There is also a concise list of pragmatic recommendations in the Appendix. The are a few black-and-white photographs used as illustration.

The copy in stock is in ok condition. The covers are a bit worn, but the pages are clean and the binding is fine.
