The Japan Architect 1991-1 was the inaugural issue of the new quarterly journal of the esteemed architectural publication. This particular issue is a monograph dedicated to architect Tadao Ando and his works and projects since late 1980s.

The issue presents 22 projects from RAIKA Headquarters to the Nakanoshima proposal for an urban park. The texts are in English and Japanese. The issue also contains three articles that discuss Ando’s architecture: “Architecture and poetry” by Renzo Piano, “Freedom and determination to create spaces” by Paul Andreu, and “Tadao Ando and his architectural world – Fertile obstruction” by Katshuhiro Kobayashi. There is also an essay by Ando himself titled “From the periphery of Architecture”. The issue also contains an invitation to the Shinkenchiku Residential Design Competition 1991 on the theme “Another Glass House” juried by Tadao Ando and Philip Johnson who has been interviewed for the journal.
