Transparent Wall is a catalogue for an exhibition of works by Markku Pääkkönen, a Finnish artist and painter. Pääkkönen is best known for his large-scale artworks and use of colour that makes art integrate into architecture and assimilate the artwork into the architectural structures. One of his main collaborators in this field is architect Juha Leiviskä. Markku Pääkkönen’s exhibition took place at the Alvar Aalto Museum in Jyväskylä in 2004.

The book consists of articles by Pentti Kareoja, Pessi Rautio, Aila Kolehmainen and Markku Pääkkönen, the artist himself. The book also showcases the following works: Gabriel’s Wing (in the CHurch of the Good Shepherd, Helsinki), Seeds (in the Espoo New Chapel), Angel Ladder (in the Mustakivi City Block Building in Helsinki), Sisters for a Few Short Moments (in the Mikkeli Town Hall Extension), I Woke up One Morning and Found that I was Alone (in the Helsinki Court of Appeal), intervals 1–3 (in the Pikkupruukki/Poikkikuja Real Estate Co in Vaasa) and Light, Grace, Consolation (in St John’s Church in Kuopio).

I operate in a field of art where it is difficult to recognise the outcome as a work of art. I have been asked many times whether I go with the architect’s plans when creating my works. On the other hand, because I go so near, on the very skin of the building, my works may have quite intensively contributed to the appearance of the architecture. To me, art means the spiritualisation of architecture, deepening its own breathing.
— Markku Pääkkönen in Transparent Wall, p. 39.
