Universal versus Individual: The Architecture of the 1960s is the proceedings of the international conference on the research of modern architecture that was held on 6–8 September 2002 in Jyväskylä, Finland. The book contains the keynote speeches by Claes Caldenby, Beatriz Colomina, Dennis Doordan, Adrian Forty,  Mart Kalm, and Mark Treib. The conference was a part of the annual international Alvar Aalto events and it was organised by the Alvar Aalto Academy in collaboration with the Alvar Aalto Foundation and the Alvar Aalto Museum.

Architects now look back to the 1960s as a time when everything was possible. Seen from today, it seems as if this was a time when clients let architects do whatever they wanted, when the most outrageously ambitious schemes were allowed to happen, and when architects could get on with building with minimal interference from regulators. If they were helped in this by the apparent permissiveness of clients, it was also made possible by the technological freedoms; for the first time, construction technologies made it possible to build more or less whatever an architect had imagined.
— Adrian Forty, The Sixties: Architecture’s Best Years? In Universal versus Individual: The Architecture of the 1960s, p. 13.
