Värien ja tunnelmien Helsinki – A City Journal studies the city of Helsinki and its architecture from the perspective of the four seasons. The author, Anne Roston Korkeakivi, is an American journalist; the images are by Tim Bird, a British photographer. The book charts the progress of a year in Helsinki from spring to winter and portrays Helsinki as an ever-changing, magical place full of originality, light and life.

Unlike many European capitals, Helsinki is a city under happy expansion, both materially and psychologically. From being a ‘Nordic’ capital she is becoming more of a ‘Nordic European’ capital. Yet she keeps a flair all her own. The first question that most people who have never been here ask me about Helsinki is either: Don’t the long dark winters make me nuts, or don’t the sleep-depriving white nights of summer drive me crazy? The answer to both is yes – and that’s just the start of what Tim and I both love so much about Helsinki. Helsinki is anything but average. Even as she becomes more and more European, she always remains true to herself. Distinct. Unique. Extreme. Peculiar. Marvelously Helsinki.
– Anne Roston Korkeakivi, Introduction to Värien ja tunnelmien Helsinki – A City Journal.
