Riitta Nikula’s Wood, Stone and Steel provides a comprehensive picture of the developments of Finnish architecture. Her target audience is readers who are somewhat familiar with Finnish architecture and culture but who seek to deepen their understanding of why buildings and cultural landscapes in Finland appear as they do. Nikula aims to inspire readers to travel around Finland and to explore its beautiful landscape “with their eyes open, to gather experiences of their own of the richness of the built environment.”

The richly illustrated book looks at the broader cultural context of the built environment. The contents explore architecture against the backdrop of the political, administrative, economic and cultural histories of Finland from the Middle Ages until the beginning of the 21st century. Nikula takes concrete built examples from the various eras and styles and explains their architectural solutions in a straightforward, yet professionally accurate manner. Wood, Stone and Steel is a follow-up to her previous title Architecture and Landscape published in 1993.

Riitta Nikula (b. 1944) is Professor Emerita of Art History at the University of Helsinki. She has published several books and both popular and academic papers on architecture, urban planning and the conservation of buildings since the early 1970s.
