Zodiac 3 International Magazine of Contemporary Architecture

Zodiac 3 International Magazine of Contemporary Architecture (1958) focuses on Alvar Aalto and his architectural production from Sunila to Imatra. The extensive Aalto article has been written by Pier Carlo Santini and Göran Schildt. In addition to Aalto, Zodiac 3 discusses Italian Neo-Rationalist architect and designer Franco Albini (1905–1977), the relation of modern Japanese architecture with functionalism, and the architectures of the national pavilions at the Brussels World’s Fair EXPO 1958.

The texts are mostly in Italian, but there is a supplement with translations in French, English and German. The copy for sale is poor condition, but the journal is still readable. The binding is split in half, the covers and the back are partly torn, but the all the pages are still there.

This rare copy of the 3rd volume of the Zodiac International Magazine of Contemporary Architecture focuses on Alvar Aalto and his architectural production from Sunila to Imatra. The executive editor of the journal is Bruno Alfieri, and the issue was published in 1958.

The articles are richly illustrated with black&white photographs and drawings. The texts are mostly in Italian, but there is a supplement with translations in French, English and German. As with all historical material, this particular issue is utterly engaging because of its historical context. The late 1950s mark the beginning of the so-called golden era in Finnish architecture and design, but also the beginning of the deterioration of the International Style. Zodiac 3 manages to capture a glimpse of the emerging changes in the architectural discourse. Giulia Veronesi’s discussion on the Pavilion of Finland at the EXPO 1958 – the international breakthrough of architects Reima and Raili Pietilä – is in that sense especially fascinating.

The copy for sale is frankly speaking in a terrible condition, but the journal is still readable. The binding is split in half, the covers and the back are partly torn, but the all the pages are still there. This is a very rare find recommended for all scholars on 20th-century modernism.
