The Helsinki Book is a new guidebook to Helsinki, the capital and the largest city of Finland. Helsinki has long enjoyed a reputation of a city full of “quirky charm” and “upstart boutiques, cool bars and new-Nordic culinary scene that are propelling the city’s ascendance“. Lonely Planet chose Finland only recently as the Best Travel Destination in 2017.

The Helsinki Book by Marc Aulén is the best book you can ever get to ensure that your stay in Helsinki will be an excellent one. Alternatively, this is the book you should give to your global loved ones to reminisce about you and your life in this strange, cold, far-away and yet, so hippie cool lovable city. The author Marc Aulén is a chef and co-owner of Restaurant Qulma. He knows what he is writing about: this delicious book is a colourful, easygoing and relaxed introduction to his favourite places, restaurants, bars and sites in his hometown.

The Helsinki Book has a short introduction to some basic facts and essential knowledge about Finland and its contemporary culture. There’s a super nice guide to bars and restaurants (what would you expect from a chef) and to shops and sites off the beaten track. Architecture-wise, the book highlights, for instance, the Rock Church by architects Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen (1969) and the Löyly Sauna by Avanto Architects (2016). The book’s greatest relevance is in showing the visitor the active, grass-root urban culture prevalent in Helsinki.

The best thing about The Helsinki Book is that it does not recapitulate the official Helsinki design city rhetoric. It has been edited with a very personal touch and with special insider’s wisdom. The groovy photographs have, for the most part, been taken by Jaeseong Park which adds to the book’s fresh approach.
