Yutaka Saito Architect (TOTO Shuppan 1998) presents a collection of works by the Japanese architect and architectural writer Yutaka Saito.
Yutaka Saito’s houses offer new qualities of space that call upon their inhabitants to forge changes in their way of life extending even into their inner being. They must strive to adjust themselves to the space. Sometimes it comes with a struggle. The distinctive-and intriguing-feature of Saito’s architecture is its proposition of new rules for creating a dwelling and new rhythms of living. The daily stimulus of living in spaces that are finely honed and full of aesthetic tension compels one to live creatively. This is not Saito’s one-sided demand, but something that develops between the architect and the client. The client is led to this architect by the desire to break away from the ordinary and seek something innovative. Saito, in turn, creates bold forms of expression based on his deep intuitive
grasp of the client’s wishes.
