Architecture, Craftmanship and Design (ed. Contributions by, for instance, Riitta Nikula, Spiro Kostof , Wolf D. Prix , Juhani Pallasmaa, Antti Nurmesniemi , Simo Heikkilä, Juha Leiviskä, and Kaisa Broner-Bauer.
Synthesis: Architecture, Craftmanship and Design sounds a self-evident and passé statement: an architect’s work should at its best be a synthesis of all of them. At the turn of the century wen the ‘National Romantic Style’ gave birth to modern Finnish architecture, the idea of a ‘total work of art’ was eagerly embraced by Finnish architects. An architect does not work any more as a lonely artist, but there still is a notion in Finland of an architect as a ‘generalist’ whose work encompasses all aspects of design from door handles to city plans (…) Is the idea of the synthesis still valid in our time of industrial building, high labour costs and lack of skilled labour, even shorter design and construction times? We wanted to look at the issue from the broader perspective by inviting foreign speakers for the first time to the Conference which the Finnish Association of Architects has been organizing annually to introduce Finland and Finnish architecture to foreigners. Finland now served as a ‘case study’ of the theme.
