Barragán – The Complete Works (ed. Raúl Rispa, Thames & Hudson 1996) is a beautiful monograph that presents Luis Barragán’s architecture in full from 1927 to 1981. Preface by Alvaro Siza; contributions by Antonio Toca Fernández, José María Buendía Júlbez, Antonio Fernández Alba, Juan Palomar Verea, Salvador Rodríguez, and Antonio Ruiz Barbarín.
No other architect in the twentieth century has been able to fuse elements of Mexican vernacular architecture, the International Style and pre-industrial materials more exquisitely than Luis Barragán. His beautiful geometric forms and surreal abstract landscapes artfully combine traditional styles and local colours with the controlled use of water and Mexico’s bold landscape, creating an architecture at once unique and instantly recognizable.
