In Contemporary Architecture – Its Roots and Trends (Paul Theobald & Co, 1964), Ludwig Hilberseimer looks into the developments preceding 20th-century modernism. Part One elaborates the Arts and Crafts Movement in England, Art Nouveau, the Viennese School of Architecture, German Werkbund, the Chicago School of Architecture and their theoretical underpinnings. Part Two focuses on the development towards an autonomous architecture through revived classicism, constructivism, neoplasticism, expressionism, the Bauhaus and so forth.
